The University of Houston Cullen College of Engineering’s concrete canoe team finished among the top 15 teams at the national competition in California over the weekend.

It was the sixth appearance by a team from the university in the 23-year history of the competition. Just like their competitors, UH earned a chance to compete in San Luis Obispo, Calif. after winning their regional contest earlier this year.

For months, a team of University of Houston civil engineering students has been concocting the perfect recipe.

A dash of fly ash, some silica fume, foam, shredded tires, PVA fibers, water, ceramic beads, glass bubbles and most importantly, a little cement. What they ended up with was a concrete mixture light enough to be buoyant.

Jerry R. Rogers, associate professor of civil and environmental engineering, was presented with one of the American Society of Civil Engineers highest national honors at the ASCE 2008 Annual Conference in Pittsburgh, Pa. in November.

In a formal ceremony, Rogers was inducted as a Distinguished Member of ASCE, the oldest engineering society in the United States. The position is second only to the ASCE president.

D. Wayne Klotz (1976 MSCE) has been named president of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the oldest national engineering society in the United States.

Klotz was installed as ASCE president Nov. 8 at the organization’s annual conference in Pittsburg, Pa. He accepts the position following a yearlong commitment as ASCE president-elect, and more than three decades in posts on ASCE committees and boards at the local, state and national levels.
